Joining the sea cadets he later signed on in the Royal Navy, during his early days training on radar he reported his ship seemed near the Needles. When his officer checked they realised they were closer than they should have been and the ship was redirected. Later during the Korean war he was on H M S Glory Aircraft Carrier with many experiences. Returning home after the war the carrier was going through the Mediterranean Sea and working to secure the Admirals Boat he fell over. by the time the alarm was raised  they realised the coxswain of the life boat was in the water. Two hours after he was found trying to swim to shore. after being picked up was charged with abandoning ship. At the hearing he was also charged with being improperly dressed with no hat. This had been lost at sea. he received 30 days `Jankers` for both offences.  At the end of his service he moved to Sydney  Australia and worked as Master on the big tourist boats and for manr years a loyal volunteer with The Maritime Mueseum in Sydney only retiring from that at 90 years of age.
